A Message from Deonna

Adventures in Ministry and a Fond Farewell!

Glory to God whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine: Glory to him from generation to generation in the Church, and in Christ Jesus for ever and ever.
Ephesians 3:20,21

Dear St John’s Family,

Serving as a priest amongst you has been a blessing. We have had a lot of adventures together! From my arrival as an ethics professor in 2017 looking for a church home, to “the pew event” of 2019, through Robert Wisnewski’s retirement and Covid in 2020, through John Leach’s arrival in 2020 and departure in 2021, through a year as your solo interim rector from Sep 2021 to Sep 2022, and then a year and half of providing some continuity and stability after Duncan’s arrival. Interspersed between those major events, there were baptisms, weddings, funerals, pastoral visits and conversations, EYC activities, confirmations, concerts, ECW events, Sunday breakfasts, staff meetings, pilgrimage groups, Lenten luncheons, acolyte training days, Wednesday dinners, Bazaars, Sunday school classes, picnics, vestry meetings, Wednesday night series talks, and much, much more! And grounding all these events was the weekly rhythm of sanctified time–our Sunday and weekday Eucharists.

(And, of course, there was also the $2M Light campaign, lots of scaffolding, the (more than) occasional roof leak, roof repairs, pipe bursts, ice machine leaks, HVAC failures, printer malfunctions, steeple repair, and more scaffolding! Did I mention there was a lot of scaffolding? Oh, and there was that stray bullet that went through the front office doors, too in March of 2022…).

But those were just events. What has made my time here at St. John’s so meaningful are all of you. Thank you for welcoming me and providing a space for me to find my feet in parish ministry. Thank you for allowing me to teach you, care for you, and share in your joys, hopes, dreams, and successes, as well as your disappointments, frustrations, fears, and failures. Thank you for your encouragement, support, love, and care of me personally and professionally. Your role in my journey as a priest has been instrumental, and I feel both proud and blessed to have been a part of this community.

As I told you all on my first Sunday as interim rector, “Everyone who runs the church is still here except one person. We’ll be fine.” That statement has been true since 1834 and is still true today because of how each of you share your gifts and exercise your ministries in service of God and the church. St. John’s will continue to flourish, thrive and become a spiritual home for those seeking to experience God’s love in community because of your presence and commitment to love God and one another, no matter what the circumstances. Don’t ever give up on God or on one another. This isn’t always easy, but this is what makes St. John’s faithful and strong.

May God continue to bless and strengthen you in the days and years ahead so that you might enjoy many more adventures in life, love, service, and ministry.

Faithfully,

Deonna+
