Youth Programs

The youth of St. John’s play an active and vital role in our parish. EYC (Episcopal Youth Community) is for teens in the 7th through 12th grades. EYC is a place for youth to safely explore and deepen their relationship with Christ, learn more about the Episcopal Church, and live into their Baptismal Covenant by serving the world around them.

Sunday School (EYC AM)

On Sunday mornings from 9:15 until 10:15, the youth gather in their space on the third floor for Sunday School. Led by a dedicated group of adult advisors, the youth spend time deepening their relationship with God and the Church, through discussion and study. There’s always coffee and something good to eat.

This year in Sunday School, we are using the gospel that will be used and taught each Sunday. This hour before church will allow each student the chance to critically think about the passage about to be taught to them. It will also allow the students to ask questions and get personal with their peers.

The goals of Sunday school are to learn that one has a life-purpose and that it is possible to discern what it is. To seek connection with the inner self (spirit, as opposed to the outer self, the ego). To see connection with God and with the world around one, both natural and human. To experience transcendence (meaning seeing how one fits into the bigger picture) and allow oneself a deeper concept of the gospel lesson. The Sunday School Lesson will also feature important elements in the Book of Common Prayer (such as Morning Prayer).

Episcopal Youth Community (EYC)

The youth of St. John’s play an active and vital role in our parish. EYC (Episcopal Youth Community) is for teens in the 7th through 12th grades. EYC is a place for youth to safely explore and deepen their relationship with Christ, learn more about the Episcopal Church, and live into their Baptismal Covenant by serving the world around them.

We share our time with fellowship, food, worship, and fun! Most Sunday evenings youth and volunteers will meet on the 3rd floor from 5:00-7:30. We’ll begin with an activity followed by dinner and worship. Junior and Senior EYCs are split for activities and games, but we eat together. Jr EYC meets from 5-6, dinner is at 6 with Jr. & Sr. EYC, then Sr. EYC meets from 6:30-7:30. We also meet Wednesday afternoons from 3:30-5:00 (location may vary, contact for more details) for coffice! This is a time to fellowship and relax midweek with one another.  Throughout the school year we’ll take trips, do service work, and hang out around town – as a form of outreach and unity in the Episcopal community. Sometimes those events will take place during our regular EYC time. Check back often for calendar information and details about events!

Due to Covid 19 there will be some changes in how we meet this fall. When updates are available they will be posted here, in the group me, and on Facebook.

Coffice will begin September 16th!

Acolytes

All confirmed, 5-12th grade youth at St. John’s are invited to serve as acolytes. After being trained by the Rector, acolytes serve in various roles during Sunday morning worship, and at other services as requested. Each year a few senior acolytes are chosen to serve as Acolyte Captains. Captains lead the acolyte team each Sunday, assist the Rector in training, and give guidance to the younger acolytes.

If you are interested in serving as an acolyte contact our Youth Director, Connie Tapia.
