Today’s Lenten meditation is about PATIENCE.
We can all identify with this message as we have all been living the year of patience. We have had to try and stay calm while experiencing a global pandemic. All of our lives have radically changed. We have been unable to move freely for fear of getting exposed to the virus. It has become impossible to visit friends and family. We do not know when we will be able to have a meal with a group of friends again, safely attend a movie, or a large event. When will we all be able attend church together or simply give someone a hug?
We have all shown patience this last year dealing with a very difficult situation. In our Lenten reading for today Jesus shows a different kind of patience. He is not calmly handling a scary situation. Rather, he is trying to get the attention of people who are not listening to his message. First, he is trying to tell the people gathered at the temple who He is. “You are from below: I am from above. You are of the world: I am not of this world.” He has said this same message repeatedly in his ministry, telling us that He is the son of God and that He is speaking on behalf of his Father. “I do nothing on my own but speak just what the father has taught me.” In hopes of getting their attention, he next repeats three times that if they do not listen to him they will die of their sins.
At the end of the passage, the scripture says that some people did listen and believed him. To these people he was able to give them the best part of the message. “If you hold to my teachings, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
May we all hear the message Jesus is trying to tell us. May we continue to have patience this coming year and look forward to a time when we can all come together again.
