Tuesday in Holy Week
Today’s Gospel is from the letter of Paul to the church in the city of Philippi, which was a Roman colony in an area in the northeast part of current day Greece. The church was established by Paul, Silas and Timothy during Paul’s second missionary expedition and was the first church established by Paul in Europe. Paul writes the letter to the Philippians from prison.
The first dozen or so times I read this passage, it seemed like a somewhat arrogant lecture by Paul to the Christians in Philippi. Once I read Chapters 1 through 3 in their entirety, I interpreted this passage with a softer meaning. Rather than a lecture, it seems to be an assurance for these Christians that there is a dichotomy between themselves and non-believers. Paul assures those who live by the example set by himself and Timothy that their citizenship is in heaven with Jesus rather than ending in destruction. Thanks be to God that this is still the message to us today!
