Suggestions for Vestry Election

Many things start up these next couple of weeks at St. John’s. New Sunday morning classes begin for people of all ages on September 7 and we hope you and your family members will make yourself part of these classes. Your staff and vestry are committed to providing high quality offerings for Christian Formation and your presence will help us a great deal. I believe I can promise that your regular participation will result in significant spiritual growth. That growth is beneficial for you and for the parish as a whole.

Adults have a choice of three classes on Sunday mornings (9:15-10:15): Living the Good News Lectionary Bible Study; Invite, Welcome, and Connect; and It’s Not Too Late – Stories of Redemption in the Bible.

There will be a Wednesday night series from October 1-22 entitled What Shaped Christian Music, with a special chance to have dialogue with our talented organist and choir director, Joel Gregory. Various other weekday opportunities are offered and you will receive other mailings about each of them this week.

This time of the year we do much to prepare for the next calendar year as well. We name dreams, set goals, and prepare a budget for 2015. Good programs do not simply emerge: they must be envisioned and planned. Without such, we grow stagnant and decline.

One very important matter that begins to take shape this time of year is our parish leadership for the future. Our Annual Meeting is set for January 25, at which time we will elect seven new Vestry members to serve a three year term. A slate of fourteen nominees is presented to the parish for consideration and seven are then elected at the Annual Meeting.

A Nominating Committee is charged with bringing forward that slate of fourteen for our consideration. The Nominating Committee consists of the outgoing members of the Vestry (Jane Barganier, Jon Dailey, Bill Eskridge, William Haynes, Jim Marshall III, Catherine Woodson) and is chaired by the outgoing Senior Warden Charlie Harris.

Your suggestions for the Nominating Committee to consider are now invited. Any ideas you have for people to serve as members of the Vestry are welcomed and encouraged. After receiving suggestions, the Nominating Committee will then develop a list to present for approval by the Vestry, and then we will proceed with the election process. Your suggestions are not official nominations so you don’t have to speak with the person(s) you would like to be considered. You may send names to Charlie Harris ( for the committee to consider.

St. John’s has a history of healthy and vibrant parish leadership. From that source, through God’s grace, an exciting atmosphere of growth and formation exists. Continue to give to your church your presence, your ideas, your full participation. And watch God magnify our efforts.

Yours faithfully,

Robert C. Wisnewski, Jr.
