St. John’s, established in the 1830s, is a vibrant part of downtown Montgomery. With an active congregation of all ages, beautiful liturgy and music, and exciting offerings in Christian formation, mission, and ministry, we share in the life and energy of the Kingdom of God that is alive and well in this area.
We believe the Christian life is to be lived both inside and outside the walls of the church. Our sermons apply the ancient truths of the Faith to our complex
twenty-first century lives. Our educational programs help people of all ages live with faithful hearts and open minds.
Our worship services are steeped in reverence for Scripture and ancient practices of the Christian Church.
Our worship is a feast for the senses. We love beautiful words, magnificent music, vibrant colors, gorgeous windows, inspiring architecture, and the taste of bread, wine, and potluck meals.
God gave us brains, and we like to use them to live faithful Christian lives.
We believe we are all on a journey, and none of us has arrived. We strive for a closer walk with Christ, yet accept people just as they are. We have just begun a new Soft Sensory Service for those who prefer worship in a calm, quiet space.
We aim to love one another and embrace our diversity. We believe that Christians can be united even though we have differences of theology and politics. Our sermons are not divisive and we tend not engage in the Culture Wars.
We believe that St John’s exists for people who are not members. God has placed us in the heart of our city, and has given us the responsibility to share the Good News of his love. We take seriously the call to relieve suffering and poverty, both locally and overseas.
We are located on the Civil Rights trail, a few blocks from the State Capitol. We are eager to work with partners to spot what God is doing in our city and join in.
We believe people are more important than dogma. This frees us to welcome and include people at all stages of life, and celebrate their journey with God.
As Montgomery’s oldest Episcopal church, we have a long history of ministering to the city. For nearly 200 years we have grown in our understanding of God’s heart, and in our call to embody the values of Christ.
