I have been on church staffs for many years and as such, I have a unique perspective on tithing. And here it is: no matter how you feel about the state of the world or church, it matters. Maybe now more than ever.
After years working in church life, I’ve learned a thing or two about where the money goes — and where it doesn’t. Your pledges keep ministries alive, the building standing, and the coffee hot enough to get everyone through Sunday morning.
But more importantly, your giving keeps the mission moving. It’s what allows us to be “a beacon in the heart of Montgomery, welcoming all into Christ’s transforming love.” That means the lights that shine through our stained glass, the food and bus passes given to our friends in need that stop by every day of the week, the hugs and lessons offered to children and youth each week, the music that lifts hearts, and the quiet comfort offered when life falls apart. Every bit of it is made possible by people who decide to give.
Let’s be honest: the world feels heavy right now. Churches everywhere are struggling. Budgets are tight. Hope can feel like it’s running on fumes. And yet—this is exactly when the church matters most. When the world is noisy, we offer stillness. When people feel unseen, we offer belonging. When hatred wins headlines, we stubbornly keep lighting candles.
Tithing isn’t about guilt or gold stars. It’s about investing in a place that still dares to believe love changes things. If you’ve ever found peace in our pews, laughter in our halls, or grace at our altar, then you’ve already seen your gifts at work.
So when you consider pledging money to St. John’s, let it not be because you feel like you have to, but because you recognize that the world needs what St. John’s gives back.
