St. John's is honored to be represented in "Alabama Hope," a new book from Birmingham photographer David Graves! The books will be available in the St. John's Bookstore starting next week, and the author will be signing copies for attendees of the ECW Conference Oct. 17.
Alabama Hope features over 125 photographs capturing the architectural beauty and spiritual depth of Jewish synagogues, Catholic, Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian, United Methodist, Episcopal, Lutheran, First Christian, and historic African American churches. Together, these images create a visual story that reflects Alabama’s rich cultural tapestry and its communities of faith.
“With Alabama Hope, my goal is to remind readers that hope is still offered to each individual and encourage each of us to share our own faith story,” says photographer David Graves. “These sacred spaces—whether modest or grand—hold generations of prayers, songs, and stories that continue to shape our state and its people.”
Graves adds, “When you step inside these places, you can feel it: the colors, the light, and the presence of community. These walls have welcomed the weary, the searching, and the joyful alike. They remind us that hope is not just history—it is alive and offered to us today.”
