Mercy House

On Thursdays, St. John’s and Church of the Ascension have a partnership to support Mercy House, a Montgomery non-profit organization. Five days a week Mercy House provides more than 200 meals to the less fortunate here in Montgomery. Through the food program and other ministries, Mercy House endeavors to create pathways of hope that have the potential to redirect lives and strengthen our community.

Our two churches provide four volunteers each Thursday from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Lunches have already been prepared prior to our arrival; we will fill Styrofoam take-out containers with food and bag those containers along with other items into grocery sacks. We then hand those sacks out to the clients along with an encouraging word.

A Signup Genius has been set up to handle the scheduling of volunteers. Check your schedule and then click here to access the Sign-Up Genius.

This is another way for our churches to serve as God’s hands in our community. Please contact Charlie Harris (549-1491) or Scott Bamman (202-6884) with any questions.

Meals on Wheels

St. John’s partners with Montgomery Area Council on Aging (MACOA) to deliver meals via the Meals on Wheels Program.
Their mission is to assist senior citizens by providing services to promote independent living, offer opportunities to enhance quality of life, and to increase community awareness of senior issues. Food insecurity is a serious issue among 1 in 6 senior adults. Meals on Wheels drivers help remedy this issue, as well as provide a safety check and combat isolation.

St. John’s Meals on Wheels Drivers will deliver  meals between 10 and 11 a.m. on the first and fifth Monday of each month. A route consists of approximately 10-12 stops and takes about an hour to complete. A ride-along training session is available for those who would like one! Sign up to help here or email constance@stjohnsmontgomery.org if you have questions.

Backpack Ministry

The Backpack Program currently in operation at St. John’s Episcopal Church offers healthy, kid-friendly meals that are easy to prepare for students identified as food insecure at George Washington Carver High School here in the City of Montgomery. The food is delivered weekly (Thursday or Friday) to Carver for distribution to approximately 30 students approved to be in the program.

Outreach Grants

At St. John’s Church we believe that God has called us to be witnesses of Christ’s love both here in our local community and abroad. We try to help those in need in our community both through gifts of our financial resources and personal involvement. Through our Outreach Grants program, which distributes over $100,000 annually, we offer grants both to faith-based and secular community agencies and programs. For more information on applying for an Outreach Grant, email churchoffice@stjohnsmontgomery.org.
